Abstract

The article offers information on the Electricity of Vietnam's (EVN) demand for new power plants to solve the power shortage. EVN general director Pham Le Thanh states that the fast growing steel industry is partly responsible for rolling blackouts because it consumed 3.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) from the 90 billion kWh of electricity in 2009. Vietnam Steel Association chairman Pham Chi Cuong says that requiring plants to build their own power supplies will intimidate foreign investors.
