Abstract

The article profiles African American woman Carolina Maria de Jesus who lived life in a slum area in São Paulo, Brazil. It mentions that Carolina writes the details of her life in notebooks from trash piles, and scavenging scrap paper is one of her jobs. De Jesus was overheard by the reporter Audálio Dantas while talking to a friend about the diary on her life. She earned from her diary compiled by Dantas into a book titled "Quarto de Despejo" (Garbage Room) with 80,000 copies.
