Abstract

The article features Oveta Culp Hobby, the first U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). It elaborates on the various demands of her position and offers a background on her family life and early career as the first Commanding Officer of the U.S. Women's Auxilliary Army Corps. Her talent for tactful administration was the main reason for U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower's choice of Oveta Hobby as Secretary of HEW. Hobby was born on January 19, 1905 in Killeen, Texas.
