Abstract

The article focuses on the rejection of the call of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Supreme Commander General Matthew B. Ridgway for a common draft period for the European Army at a Continental conference in Belgium in August 1952. The Belgian government expressed concern over the political implication of its two-year draft period. Also noted is the plan of Britain to reduce the number of its troops in Germany. The slowdown was attributed to the economic problem.
