Abstract

The article tells the story of a group of dacoits or bandits in the Forest of Gir in India, led by a religious man named Visa Manjaria who vowed to bring his god 100 pounds of noses from patels or the subcaste to which most policemen in that region belonged. He was popular among villagers who disliked the patels, a privileged group. He never harmed women even if they were patels. He cut off 250 patel noses with his kukri knife in two years before being caught in ambush by the police and killed.
