Abstract

The article discusses the flight of the U.S. Surveyor 6 to the moon in November 1967. It notes that it is probably the greatest technological achievement in the first ten years of the space era. It says that it has led to man's first in-depth knowledge of the chemical makeup and consistency of the moon soil. It relates that before it became a success, a congressional subcommittee in 1965 regarded it as one of the most poorly made National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) projects.
