Abstract

The article reports on the choreography of a jewel-inspired dance by George Balanchine, ballet. It reveals that the choreography was created when Claude Arpels, a jeweler from Van Cleef & Arpels SA, made a suggestion to Balanchine to promote the said dance. It also notes that Balanchine has turned to the grand manner of classical ballet, spinning out variations that resembled traditional Russian dancing removed from the law of gravity.
