Abstract

The article reports on the severe farm-labor shortages in the farming industry in California. It states that the job or picking big crops was done by Mexican immigrant workers known as braceros who complained of the 1.25 U.S. dollar-per hour federal minimum wage which irritated American labor unions and pointed to the domestic jobless rolls. It notes that Governor Pat Brown approves a 1.40 U.S. dollar an hour wage scale and approved and an employment of about 3,500 braceros.
