Abstract
- The article focuses on Joe Palooka, the most popular sporting hero in the history of the comic strips. It profiles the late Hammond Edward Fisher and describes how he created Palooka, a heavyweight champion who first appeared on April 19, 1930. It discusses the features and adventures of Palooka, the themes and other characters of the strip, and the artists engaged by the McNaught Syndicate to carry on the strip after Fisher ended his life in 1955.
