Abstract
- The article focuses on Greentree, one of the last privately owned society stables where racehorses are trained and developed. Greentree's winter quarters is located in Aiken, South Carolina and is being manned by foreman Francis "Pickles" Hertzfeld whose boss is John M. Gaver, the stable's head trainer for 25 years. Most racing thoroughbreds are kept at Aiken where they are trained and retrained for the new racing season in New York and Maryland. Gaver has won some important races including the Kentucky Derby.
