Abstract
- The article discusses the developments in the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and Soviet Union. It states that despite some progress of detente, the two premier superpowers of the world have continued their efforts to improve their nuclear armaments. It reveals that Soviet Union has successfully tested their SS-19 intercontinental ballistic missile, and is willing spend more money to make advances in their conventional and nuclear weapons and to enlarge their armed forces. Meanwhile, it notes that U.S. President Richard Nixon has proposed that the Congress should increase the defense budget. Information on the responsibilities of U.S. Defense Secretary James Rodney Schlesinger to meet the Soviet weapons threat is also provided.
