Abstract

The article focuses on the collaboration of art and science for the conservation of art in Florence, Italy. It mentions the art Restoration Laboratories in the city's 16th century Fortezza da Basso is said to be the world's proving grounds for conservation methods. The result of the collaboration of art and science is seen in the Fra Angelico's Crucifixion which was suffering from a pockmarked rash resulting from crystallization within the plaster. Enzo Ferroni, a chemist at the University of Florence, found the ammonia solution that turns the crystals back into calcium carbonate again. Umberto Baldini, the dynamic head of the restoration laboratories, points out that restoration is primarily consisted of repainting.
