Abstract

The article discusses the hoax made by author Clifford Irving on his book "The Autobiography of Howard Hughes." It states that much of Irving's book was taken from the manuscript of writer James Phelan, who was hired to ghostwrite the account of Noah Dietrich, the man with the knowledge of Hughes' life. It relates that in February 1972, Irving declared in the U.S. Attorney's office in New York City that his detailed account was fraud. It recounts how Irving forged the manuscript of Phelan.
