Abstract
- The article discusses the issue of transracial adoption in the U.S. It says that in 1970, 2,200 black babies were adopted by white parents and compared with only 700 in 1968 and in 1971 the number reached 10,000. The author says that the trend is fueling partly by changing racial attitudes and by an acute shortage of white babies resulting from widespread use of contraceptive pills, easier abortion laws and an increasing number of unwed mothers who keep their offspring. Discussing the psychological aspects, the author observes that establishing a sense of identity is hard for many adopted children and this will be even harder for the transracial children.
