Abstract

Chapter Eleven of the book "The European Economy Since 1945: Coordinated Capitalism and Beyond," by Barry Eichengreen is presented. It explores the decade of the 1980s which started the emergence of Europe from deep recession triggered by intense inflationary pressures and harsh measures to contain them. It emphasizes the need for deeper economic integration which resulted to the creation of the Economic Commission, the Court of Justice, the Parliament, and the Single Market Program of 1986.
