Abstract
- The article reports on the factors that resulted on the defeat of Prime Minister James Callaghan of the Labor Party in Great Britain over Conservative Leader Margaret Thatcher in the May 3, 1979 general election. It relates that Callaghan failed when 11 members of the Scottish National Party withdrew their support and demanded a no confidence vote, when the former denied their request that the government should pursue the Scottish home rule's legislation. Moreover, the popularity rating of Callaghan had been severely damaged because of several factors such as the failure to deal with the powerful trade unions whose been on strike, as well as the shutdown or partial operation of hospitals and schools in many cities.
