Abstract

The article focuses on the East Building of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., which was founded by Paul Mellon to serve as his gift to the U.S. It states that the new building will be one of the most expensive public buildings in the U.S., in which the fund for the construction mostly came from Mellon and his foundation. It says that the building is a combination of exhibition space and study center designed by architect I. M. Pei. Meanwhile, Pei reveals that the building will be given to the U.S., that is why Mellon wants to make sure that it will not be a burden to the nation and ensuring that all materials and other concerns must be maintenance-free as possible. Furthermore, the opening of the building will be on January 1, 1978, in which six major exhibitions will be featured.
