Abstract

The article reports on the shootout at the once residence of Emperor Haile Selassie in February 1977, which was followed by the execution of Brigadier General Teferi Benti and eight of his supporters in the Dergue in Ethiopia. The incident involved a struggle for power within the Dergue between Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam and Lieutenant Colonel Atnafu Abate and Benti's supporters. Mengistu claimed that Benti and his supporters had been killed due to their secret support for the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP).
