Abstract

The article reports on the political and social tensions in Lebanon in 1976. It cites the death of 200 people in just one day due to wild mortar and artillery duels in Beirut. It states the ratification of a constitutional amendment by the Lebanese parliamentary government for the election of a new president, who will succeed Suleiman Franjieh. It notes that the neighboring Syrian government has deployed at the border of the two countries. Syrian President Hafez Assad says that the troops are intended for those who insist the continuity of war in Lebanon.
