Abstract

The article focuses on the political events in China. It explores the counterrevolution incident that took place at T'ien An Men Square which led to the oust of then vice premier of the government and chief of staff of the army Teng Hsiao-p'ing. It details the promotion of Hua Kuo-feng whose pre-Premier post marked the first stage of the assault on Teng. It claims that the elevation of Hua to his post and Teng's dismissal appeared to be an attempt by the party leadership to ensure an untroubled succession to the reign of Mao Tse-tung. Details of Hua's contributions to the Chinese government are also offered.
