Abstract

The article discusses the characteristics of Fauvism. It explores the origin of the art movement in which paintings are characterized by bright and dissonant colors with distorted drawings as seen in the works of various painters such as Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy. Even though Fauvism does not have unifying doctrine and a strong common practice, it notes that Fauvism is considered as the first modern art movement. It also cites the exhibition titled "The Wild Beasts: Fauvism and Its Affinities," sponsored by SCM Corp. and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Also discussed is the difference between expressionism and Fauvism.
