Abstract

The article focuses on the issues involving the rule imposed by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on July 1975, part of an effort to tighten the month-old media control in time with the special parliamentary session. It says that by submitting to the rule, journalist was signing away its freedom since the new restriction will ban them to publish anything against the government. It adds that while Indian newsmen will be jailed if they did not conform, foreign correspondents facing only expulsion, resisted. CBS News president Richard Salant states that signing would only mean it is either they are lying or agreeing with their rules for bad journalism. Chief Censor Harry D'Penha argue that the imposed restriction is not witch hunting, but aims in establishing a basis of confidence.
