Abstract

The article focuses on the actions taken by the U.S. President Gerald Ford during the 1975 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit that was held in Brussels, Belgium. It states that Ford made a speech in the opening session of the conference, wherein he reaffirmed that NATO is the U.S. policy's foundation in Europe although he also mentioned the need to overcome the difficulties and strains in the alliance. It says that Ford was viewed by several participants in the conference as a confident one in terms of foreign affairs. However, the speech of Ford regarding détente was considered by NATO leaders as a personal view.
