Abstract

The article features Vladimir Yashchenko, the 18-year-old Ukrainian who broke Dwight Stones' world record by using a straddle jump at the U.S.-Soviet Union junior track tournament in Richmond, Virginia. He reset the high jump record at 7' 7" and became the youngest world-record holder in the event's history. He also rekindled the debate over which is the better technique between the straddle style and the Fosbury Flop. Other jumpers who use the straddle-style are also noted.
