Abstract

The article focuses on the Topeka shiner or Notropis topeka, a small minnow found in the Big Sioux, James and Vermillion River watersheds in South Dakota. Its distribution has been reduced to as little 10 percent of historical levels, due to factors including loss and degradation of habitat, and stream impoundment. Listed as federally endangered species in January 1999, South Dakota prepared a state management plan, allowing management of species and maintenance of its habitat.
