Abstract

The article focuses on the role of female artists in the history of art. It narrates how in the eighteenth century women had to assert themselves for their needs to be recognized and how female supporters of the art started to increase from contributing to literature to posing as models for paintings and portraits. It explores the lives, works, subject matter and techniques of pioneering female artists including Angelica Kauffmann, Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun, and Mary Cassatt.
