Abstract

The author discusses the techniques in carbon and pencil sketches that are useful in the reproduction of book illustrations. It mentions that the pencil sketch gives the artist the opportunity to be flexible in his expression of colors and tonalities without adding to production cost. The reproduction method called halftone is a tedious process that requires retouching, which is addressed by the use of a fluorescent base or the magenta process developed by Eastman.
