Abstract

This article discusses the emergence of the Indian Ocean as a zone of trade competition. Business Monitor International (BMI) expects China and India to be the main competitors in foreign trade in the region. However, BMI warns about a rise in tensions in the region because of the rivalry. The firm identifies the reasons for the importance of the Indian Ocean to the global balance of power, including the East-West trade route, international piracy and global naval power.
