Abstract

The article discusses a study which investigated the efficacy of brief interventions aimed at addressing violence and alcohol use among adolescents presenting to an urban emergency department. The randomized controlled trial involved adolescents who reported past-year alcohol use and aggression at a level I ED in Flint, Michigan between September 2006 and 2009. They undertook combined motivational interviewing with skills training and a brief intervention, which resulted in a drop in the prevalence of self-reported aggression and alcohol consequences.
