Abstract

The article discusses the farm-raised catfish in the U.S. which provide one of the most affordable and environmentally sustainable sources of safe, tasty, high-quality animal protein available to American consumers. It notes that cultivated catfish of various species surpass all aquacultured finfish except carp and salmon on its sales which is measured by numbers of fish, tonnage, or dollar value. It also notes that in the U.S., catfish is the most widely produced freshwater fish. It also notes that 728 million catfish weighing 28 million pounds were sold for 373 million dollars in 2009.
