Abstract

The article presents a report of Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC), for the period May 1973 to November 1974, and discusses the recommendations for Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). According to LRPC report, ACM's constituency includes all those people who are interested in acquiring technical knowledge about computers and their applications in order to improve their jobs. To handle with the depth of the various interest areas, Special Interest Areas (SIAs) have been defined by ACM. There are four SIAs in the area of professional interests, which include computer science and technology, uses and effects of the computer, computer management and personnel, and computer technology. According to the LRPC report, SIAs should be more clearly defined, and should be included in the organizational structure of ACM. There should be a modification in the structure of ACM. For this , a Chapter Board will have to be established, which would be headed by a chairman elected by the members. ACM should also publish a common periodical, which would be sent to all ACM members. The responsibility for ACM conferences should be given to the ACM headquarters. ACM should establish methods of collecting and analyzing data on the opinions of members regarding ACM activities, and information about the level of education and interests of the individual members.
