Abstract

This article presents news briefs related to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM President Walter Carison's goal of 100,000 ACM members by 1975 may come closer to fulfillment through a challenge issued by A.A.J. Hoffman, representative to the ACM Council for the South Central Region, to all other ACM regions for a membership expansion contest. Replacements for two editors of the ACM Journal, Alfred Lehman and Saul Gass, whose terms expired December 31, 1970, have been announced by Gerard Salton, editor-in-chief. Operations of the ACM Professional Development Program have been resumed with a series of seminars to be held in January and February in various cities in the U.S. and Canada. Support for the Urban League Training Center, an effort to aid disadvantaged and minority group persons by training them in EDP skills, has been announced by the Los Angeles Chapter of the ACM. The ACM Chapter's support for the Center will be principally involved with educating industry as to the capabilities of the Center's graduates and providing guidance and assistance in placement activities.
