Abstract

The article features painter and lithographer Philip Hicken. The artist, who taught for seventeen years at the Art Institute of Boston, stresses the seven elements of design, with each element characterized by an inherent dominant feature. He believes that repetition scatters design, while dominance and variety unite an artwork. Due to his drawing style, his subjects are often in the page's center.
