Abstract
- The article profiles 19th century artist, scientist and teacher Thomas Eakins. He became a controversial figure while teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts because of his disregard of social norms that offended the conservative. His insistence that his students use brushes to form a figure have made them more proficient in creating life-like drawings. However, Eakins experienced a period of depression when the academy dismissed following a series of complaints against him.
