Abstract

The article discusses the history of the art of fore-edge painting. Fore-edge decoration reportedly began when books were still made of vellum and stored shelved flat, with librarians lettering the titles on the exposed edges of books. It is stated that the early history of fore-edge painting is centered on the theme of identification. The author mentions that edge decoration, mostly floral and heraldic design was known in Europe from the 10th century onwards.
