Abstract

The article presents a study examining the prevalence rates of depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among infantry soldiers from the Active Component and National Guard combat teams following their deployment to Iraq at 3- and 12-month time points using different case definitions, such as functional impairment and alcohol abuse. The data source, survey measures, quality control procedures and analysis are discussed. It finds that the prevalence rate ranges from 9% to 31% and is greater at 12 months among National Guard soldiers.
