Abstract

The article examines the political stability risks in Kazakhstan in 2010. President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who ruled since before its independence, has changed its constitution several times to extend his term. It predicts that tension among business elite who calls for ousting of Nazarbayev will worsen due to lack of political influence combined with lower real gross domestic product (GDP) growth. The reshuffle of Nazarbayev's officials that put loyalists into power in 2008 has benefited his son-in-law Timur Kulibayev and Prime Minister Karim Masimov.
