Abstract

The article discusses research on the p53 codon 72 polymorphism in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) in Rome, Italy. The presence of either arginine (Arg) or proline (Pro) in the amino acid sequence resulted from the single nucleotide substitution in the p53 codon 72. The *Arg allele proportion in DM1 significantly increased compared with controls. Results show the p53 codon 72 polymorphism and DM1 association is influenced by gender, maternal age and gestational order.
