Abstract
- In this article the authors examine the ways in which young women in Iran express disagreement within the confines of their own language and culture. The investigation is measured by the effects of solidarity and deference proposed by linguistic experts Ron and Suzanne Scollon. In addition the data is analyzed under the established classification of Geoffrey Leech, a professor of linguistics. The central focus of the article is on the contention that considerations of deference may supersede solidarity in a non-Western Islamic state such as Iran.
