Abstract

The article presents an overview of the security situation in South Asia in 2010. It cites the threats against South Asia's security such as the Indo-Pakistani tensions, U.S.-led operations against Afghanistan and Islamist militancy. It indicates the characteristics that make the region important to global security such as having the world's biggest Muslim population and India's rise as a major economic and geopolitical power. It considers the U.S., China and Russia as the major external powers capable of shaping South Asia's security.
