Comparative biology of chronic and aggressive periodontitis vs. peri-implantitis.

The article explores the similarities and dissimilarities between the disease entities of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Analysis on the etiology and pathogenesis of both diseases show that they have more similarities than differences. The initiation of both diseases depends on the presence of a biofilm containing pathogens. Differences in their host response explain the occasional rapid progression of peri-implantitis lesions.
