Abstract

The article focuses on the findings of the English and Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study carried out to investigate the effects of early institutional deprivation on cognitive functions and academic achievement of children adopted from Romania. It states that the degree of initial impairment and cognitive development could influence the academic attainment. It mentions the association of intelligent quotient (IQ) with genetic and environmental influences. It states that the study focused on determining the association of cognitive gains between 11 and 15 years with deprivation-specific psychological patterns (DSPs). It concludes that cognitive gains with disabilities at 11 sustained up to the age of 15 years.
