Abstract

The article offers information on the nature of physical education in late-19th and early-20th century Great Britain in pubic and private elementary schools, preparatory schools, boys' grammar schools and girls' schools. It discusses how the students that attended these schools during this time would later serve as imperial administrators in Tanganyika and as a result much of what they experienced would serve as the basis for the physical education that would be taught there. The article examines the types of activities that were part of the British physical education curriculum and explores the influence it had on British-ruled Tanganyika and later on Tanzania.
