Abstract

The article discusses historical aspects of invasive species, noting that the phenomenon began when humans began using ships for international trade. It notes beneficial outcomes of introduced species such as wheat, rice, and cattle that were brought to the U.S. in the 16th century, and the bad outcomes associated with others including Asian Carp that threaten the fishing industry of the Great Lakes, gypsy moths introduced in 1869, and the kudzu plant introduced to the southeast U.S.
