Abstract

The article presents a historical analysis of object lesson cards which were used in object centered and child centered education in Great Britain and the United States in the early 19th century. The lessons associated with the cards, which featured an object adhered to cards, were developed to teach children about the senses and sense perception and about subjects such as geography, natural history, industry, commodities, and religion. A discussion of an object lesson card from the Cotsen Children's Library at Princeton University, which featured a cookie and was used to instruct children on the ways that wheat was utilized in food products, is presented.
