The article discusses the differences between historical and contemporary museum exhibitions and consequently the realities which they depict. A survey of documentation accompanying displays from the historic chambers of art to the modern idea of a representable reality is conducted. Changes in historical systems of thought are seen as influencing exhibit space, object presentations, and museological display techniques. Dilemmas and challenges facing contemporary curators of museums are explored.
