Abstract
- The article, part of a forum on the historiography of transnational sexuality, discusses the integration of the history of sexuality into all other fields of modern European historiography in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Three influential developments in approaches to the history of sexuality are first discussed, described as "archaeological," "integrationist," and "comparativist" approaches. Relevant topics studied by historians of Europe since the 1990s are then reviewed, followed by a lengthy discussion of the phenomenon of historical cycles of liberalism and conservatism regarding sexual norms in the societies of Western Europe.
