Abstract

In this article the author discusses being involved in a foreign aid program in Japan in the 1950s, establishing the Japan Productivity Center (JPC), and issues related to quality with the Japanese manufacturing sector. The author states that the JPC was probably the single most important organization developed in Japan at the time. The author discusses the working conditions for Japanese workers and managers, organizational structure, the need for specialization and expertise in the Japanese manufacturing industries.
