Abstract

Over the past 20 years, public art has become an increasingly important factor in the development of public projects that strive to create or expand the identity of towns and cities around the globe. Some of the most extensive public art projects have developed through the expansion of light-rail systems in urban areas. This paper explores not only the development of some of these projects, but also the components that function in combination to generate a sense of place-specificity for the daily users of these art-enhanced public transport systems. The emphasis of this paper is the human experience in relation to these extensive projects and whether those experiences in relation to a sense of place, constitute the final measure of success.
