- The article discusses the impact of state and federal taxes on the performance of stocks and bonds. Wealth manager Niall Gannon calculates that taxation has substantially reduced the annualized return on Standard & Poor's 500 stocks for high-net-worth investors in California. Gannon notes that state tax rates play a role in determining the relative attractiveness of stocks and bonds.
